He is the only Hollywood male star know who is completely lacking in what the bobby-soxers nowadays call "wump." He has as much obvious sex appeal as a raindrop. His hair is thin, even with his toupee; his waist- line is slightly ovold.

There comes a time in every woman's life when she feels siek to death of the men with whom she has to live and associate. There are moments when she thinks she can't bear them any longer bear our vanities, our pomposities, our selfishness.

And, on the screen, at least, Bing, doesn't seem to have any of them. He looks as if he would even be

Charm School starlet Carol Marah gets big film chance

When Redgrave was over tn Hollywood filming last year, she went with him; and she was en- gaged to appear In "A Woman s "Vengeance" (the screen version of Aldous Huxley's story, "The Gioconda Smile"). Now Mr Huxley has made his Dwn stage version of the story, which is to be seen at the New

Theatre in London.

Miss Kempson was naturally wanted for the same role, But meantime she had been engaged to play In "The Paragon," a new play at the Fortune.

After an tmavalling search for another suitable actress, Mr Huxley so as to refer to the murdered wife has re-written "The Gioconda Smile" without bringing her on to the stage.

Clive Brook will be the husband Brown (re- covered from the indisposition which caused her to relire from the stage last year) the murderess; Marle Ney the nurse.

Sixteen minutes, on the screen, is a long time.

Dimitri Tiomkin is the composer who wrote 10 minutes of music to go with the pantomime scene and

he is slated by his unusual assign- ment

"It's a pleasure to write pure mood music again," he suld. "It very seldom has been possible since sound came in."

Music Scores

Although music didn't obccompany silent pictures, studios sent out or- chestral score

music

for all top movies for the benefit of theatro pit orchestras and organists. Since Ühen, the music has been kept in the back- ground hardly noticeable above the dialogue.

"Writing music to be played while people talk presenta some technical problems," Tlomkin said, "For instance; you have to be care- Tul that the pitch of your Instru- menis doesn't conflict with the voices of the players.. That can be n problem, since the music is writ- ten lang before the scene is shot,"

Tiomkin says he has to know every thing there is to know about picture before he starts writing tho music for it. Each character, or ot Icost each leading character, has to have a recognisable musical theme which is played In background overy time he appears.

the

Writing those brief and charac teristic themes requires a thorough knowledge of what the characters are like and, if possible, which ng- tors are playing them.

Tiomkin's 10 minutes of mood music for the silent sequence took eight days to write,
