A communique issued by the Irgun commander, Menrchim Beigin, said Irgun was withdrawing its recognition from the newly proclaimed Government of Israel. It added, however, that Irgun "asked our fighters to refrain from engaging in any combat within the Jewish camp," because of the Arab-Jewish

Thus, in effect, Irgun is returning to the role of the illegal underground or- ganication it played in harassing the British before they gave up the Palestine man- date. A new Jewish law forbids any armed force outside the Army and. classes disobedience to civil law as treason.
