Safe Six Is Turned Into Seven Hearts
By WILLIAM E. MCKENNEY
THERE
VHERE are 40,000,000 cord play- ers in the United States, and I Ruppose every one of them plays at least once a year in a charity event. In January Mrs Ralph H. Schel-
Harry J. lenberg and
Fishbein, who run the Mayfair Bridge Club in New York, put on a game from which all entrance fees were given to the March of Dimes. I played with Nick Minuskin, chairman of bridge tournaments for the March of Dimes. Nick and I had won the tournament.
Today's hand came up. On the opening lend of the diamond threc, Nick played low from dummy' and Enst, feeling from the bidding that the ace of diamonds would be

give up play, put on the jack. Nick won with the queen, cashed the king of clubs and led a small heart over to the king.
Now the average player might make the mistake of lending the ace of clubs and discarding the five of spades. But there is a chance to make seven on this hand and L always can be played safely for six.
01
Nick made the correct play of the seven of clubs, trumping in his own hand with a small heart. Then he laid down the ace of hearts, picking up East's jack. He went over to dummy with the ten of hearts and ruffed another club. The six hearls was overtaken by the seven `in dummy, and now the ace of clubs
was laid down.
When
the jack dropped from the East band, Nick discarded the six of diamonds. The ten of diamonds was discarded dummy's hith club, then the queen of spades was led. East refused to cover, declarer let it ride and thus made seven.
