Apathetic Interest In S. African General Elections

GOVT. EXPECTED TO GO BACK WITH REDUCED MAJORITY

Cape Town, May 23.-Supporters of Field Marshal Jan Smuts' United Party worked foverishly today to whip up interest in the parliamentary elec tions which will be held on Wednesday.

Campaigning for election in which 138 members of the new parliament will be chosen, has, been tranquil. The people evidenced little enthusiasm and the only excitement came when nationalists broke up several meetings of the United Party.
