Dr Robert A. Staff of Rockville, Ind., and Ewell O'Brien of Terre Haute, Ind., were darkhorse With ners of the All American open pair championship of French Lick, Ind.

In today's hand Staff (North) and O'Brien (South) were using the Gerber four club convention, and O'Brien's four club bid asked his partner for aces. With no aces the response would be four diamonds; one ace, four hearts; two aces, four spades.

South's four no trump asked for kings. Five clubs would have de-

ated holding any kings. North, with

two kings, bid Ave hearts.

South decided to sign off with the bid of five spades, but North felt: that if his partner held enough to be looking for a slem, he certainly had the makings of one, so he put South in six.

O'Brien made the hand by a triple squeeze, After the opening lead of the ace of hearts, West shifted to the eight of spades. East went up with queen, 'declarer won with the ace and cashed the Jack.

Ret

South then proceeded to himself down to the nine of spades, Jack of hearts and seven of dilu- monds. West was left with the jack and four of diamonds and nine of clubs, Dummy held the ace and nine of diamonds and three of clubs. While East had the queen of hearis and queen-ten of diamonds.

O'Brien led the last spade. West could not throw away the nine of clubs er dummy's three-spot would become good. When he let go diamond, declarer, discarded the club from dummy, and East wea squeezed. He had to hold the queen of hearts

or O'Brien's fuck would be good.

When he let to a diamond, O'Brien won the last two tricks with the ace and nine of diamends In dummy.

This hand. also produces a very interesting cross-ruй.
