THEIR FILMS

A

BY PATRICIA CLARY

MOVIE producer-director believes the film scenes you remember best are the ones that show the glamorous star: diving eagerly into a plate of food.

You can leave out the clinches with the leading man, Lloyd Bacon thinks. The clinches the movle-goer likes are the onca with the big thick steak.

Bacon's food fad has almost reached the point where he picks his menus before he picks his stars. He doesn't know whom he's going to get for his next picture. "The Gut- tering

HI" for instance, but be does know all about the scenes in which the characters prepare, con- template, talk about, cat, and dawdle over food.

Bacon has kept detailed notes of scene-by-scene audience reactions to his own and other pletures. They have led him to adopt a rigid policy of at least two or three eating scenes In all future productions.

EATING 'APPEALS!

"The psychology is simple. Food is u pleasant idea," Bacon said.

"It

is an axiom in the publishing busi- ness that long enough and frequent enough eating sequences will sell any

book.

P

of

"Most of the top newspaper columnists gets on the subject food frequently. Most magazints have food departments. Cook books are always among the best sellers,

Audiences are always impressed by eating scenes even when !իա: aren't pleasant. Remember Charles Laughton's portrayal of Henry VIII. The part that stands out is the way he tossed the bones over his shoul-

der."

Even movie romance frequently is associated with food.

"Any time the gal accepts the boy's invitation to dine in a little Italian restaurant with red-checked tablecloths and candles stuck in wine bottles," he said, "you can be sure romanco

about to bloom." There's one place where Bacon draws the line.

"No picture of mine," he swore, "will denote the passage of time by showing an empty plate,United Pross.

Hollywood has a tendency to seri- mentalise its own past and imbue biography with falso values, but here they have resisted that and even used a sense of humour,

Pearl's on-and-off romarico with an actor who once fired her from a small touring company is rather n nuisance, but the main line of the story is buster being amusing than in secking to beatify the star.

The

atmosphere of the early movies is delightfully caught

I know she is not to everybody's taste, but I confess to a stubborn affection for tho. drive and expert- ness she brings to everything she docs.

Maybe some nostalgia is needed for a full appreciation of this pic- ture. Certainly for those of us who now count the saver threads among the mousy-brown there is that ex- tra zest of recaptured childhood thrills.

For this was the opening shot in "Woman Hater," Mr Granger's first effort at comedy. He is due for n whole catalogue of what the studio describe 113 "sophisticated slapstick." No star can continue indefinitely to be more popular than the pic- tures in which he nets, and Granger felt he should break away

from heavy melodrama, I think he is wise to try the comedy experiment. On the wider issue, it is about time the principal British companies made
