Immediate Order To

Cease Fire

Lake Success, Apr. 28.-Arab and Jewish re- presentatives told the United Nations Trusteeship Council tonight that they were prepared to send telegrams to their organisations in Palestine recommending an immediate cease-fire inside the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem.

Mr Moshe Shertok, of the Jewish Agency, and Jamal Husseini, for the Palestine Arab Higher Com- mittee, both agreed that, providing the other side observed a truce, they would recommend to their parent bodies to declare an immediate cease fire inside the boundaries of the Old City.

of

Mr Shertok reiterated his preference for a truce which would cover at least the municipal area Jerusalem. Jamal Husseini also reiterated his

pro viously expressed desire that Haganah forces should be withdrawn from the Old City, but he did not press this point, and the general impression in the Council was that the Arabs would not make this a condition of acceptance.

Tel-Aviv, Apr. 28.-Jewish forces, attacking the Arab port of Jaffa in the face of British Spitfires and armoured defences, tonight claimed to have occupied the Manshich quarter, in the northwestern area of the city.

Irgun Zvai Leumi, the Jewish terrorist force, announced the "surrender" of the Manshieh quarter at the headquarters on the borders of Jaffa, and said that a co-ordinated attack by Haganah was pushing forward against the southern Jaffa suburb of Telrish. Early today, British forces went into action to pro vent the Jewish conquest of the Arab city, after the Jews had renewed their assault from neighbouring Tel. Aviv.
