Services Finals Tonight

Heavy Slogging Feature Of Preliminary Rounds

The preliminary rounds of the first post-war Services Boxing Championships were fought off at the China Fleet Club yesterday afternoon where the finals also are to be held tonight, com- mencing at 8 p.m. Individual titles only are being contested.

The preliminaries showed up some all-out fighting as well as occasional good boxing and saw Trishmen, Aus- tralians and Danes in the ring as well as Englishmen.

The fights held a good deal of gallery appeal, there. being a minimum of dawdling, and fight fans would 'be doing themselves a disservice in missing the finals tonight.

Hongkong's Chinese com- munity will be represented in the tennis tournament at the Chinese National Games in Shanghai by the Tsui brothers, Choy Tin-fook and P. T. Hsu.

A meeting of the Colony Open Chess Championship Committee held yesterday evening passed a motion recommending to next year's committee that the Colony Reserve Tournament, to he started early next month, serve as a qualifyingTM tourna ment for next year's Open Championship final.

The meeting decided that it would make no specific recom- mendation regarding the num- ber of players to qualify from the tourney for next year's Open final." It was also decided, after lengthy deliberation, that the Reserve Tournament be single-round affair.

A surprise last-minute entry, was the Colony's Grand Old Man of Chess, D. E. de Carvalho, a leading player locally and in Manila since the turn of the century and on many occasions, Colony Champion, the last time he won the title being on 1939.

His entry is the fifth senior one in the Reserve Tournament, which now includes three of the ax players who contested the Colony Champion- ship the last time it was played in 1041. It will be his first post-war tournament appearance and he will start equal favourite with Kar povich, Welss and Dounneff.
