Read To NEW LOOK ON
The Young Child
By Garry Cloveland Myers, Ph.D. OFTEN I have urged parents to rend to the young child, begin- ning as soon as he will look pleture for # few moments al streich. Thanks to the pictures, story reading can begin much earlle than story telling.

to practically every baby and tui. The child usually hears far better language in the atory rend thun in the story told. Reading tends to calm and quiet the child. It affords good companionship and is to babysitters.
HELPS THE CHILD
Reading helps the child connect what he hears with the book, cul tivates in him a tenderness toward books, makes him wish to learn to rend, and stimulates hip interest in meaning rather than in mere words. It is about the best possible means of fostering good habits of conren- tration in baby and young child. It gives the child a vast deal ef happiness, makes the reader enjoy the child and helps improve his own case and forcefulness of speech.
Today I wish to present two types of cases in which the child should profit greatly from being read to: one case in which the child uses Dr correct sounds for certain letters and letter combinations, the other in which the child speaks in single words or phrases.
1. The rst case is of a boy Ave. "Some of his word difficulties are: 'pete' for sircet, bake' for break, titty for kitty, 'posh' for anash. The beginning of his words seems to be his trouble."
Reading of nursery rhymes and poems, slowly and distinctly with emphasis on the words of similar troublesome sounds should be very helpful to this child. Any mother can easily select rhymes including the strategic, words or sounds for frequent repetition, without the child's knowing her purpose.
A BOY OF FOUR
2. The second case is of a boy
four, who is causing his parems concern "because of his lack of ability, or destre, to carry on a con- versation. He knows and uses hun- dreds of words, mostly nouns and verba, separately or In short

Mr. Punch Visited Tom Thumb
-He Found Him Living in a Nut-Shell House-
By MAX TRELL :
[NARF and Hanld, the shadow- children with the turned-about names, asked their friend Mr. Punch if he knew anyone as small as Tom Thumb.
"The children were reading about him this afternoon in a book," Hanid explained. "But they didn't believe that anyone could be as small as Tom Thumb."
Mr. Punch smiled. He was read- ing a nowspaper, but he folded and held it on his lap. "The children. my dear, are quile wrong. Tom Thumb was quito smali. That is true. But there are lots of creatures-- busy, lively creatures, too-who are a good deal smaller than Tom Thumb. Take the ants, for example. To an ant Tom Thumb (who was no
