TSUI WAI-PUI ONLY

VETERAN TO WIN

Younger Tsui And

Rumjahns

Out

Tsui Wai-pui was the only veteran to survive the quarter-finals

of the Open Singles at the HKCC yesterday. Both the Rumjahn cousins went down to younger players and Tsui Yun-pui, although he showed a good deal of fight in the second set, proved no match for last year's Colony Champion, Ip Koon-hung.

The Stand Court was packed for the Ip-Tsui encoun- ter and standing room spectators were three or four deep. Some sparkling tennis was seen that saw the younger Toul retrieve impossibles again and again only to be out- 'manoeuvred and go down 6-3, 10-8,

The last four are Ip Koon-at the corner of the net that hung, the holder, Choy Tin-fook, younger, nippler player would have managed one time in ten. R. Segalen, and Taul Wal-pui, - un ex-champion.

GALLERY'S FAVOURITE Tsul was the gallery's favourite after this exhibition of gameness and restored confidence showed him, in the immediately succeeding games, up to the par of the best days of his prime.

Of the two newcomers to make the last four, Choy Tin-look was the more impressive. He will have a hard job of it making an impression on Ip in the semi-final next Mon-

It looked minutes a game that bore little resemblance

For some to the old Open Singles school. Down 1-3 in the first set, he wore Rumjahn though Tsu! would manage to take down with strokes that skimmed the the set. Down in the first set at 1-3, he recovered

to lend 5-3, when Rumah caught up, and then took the next second two games for sel. In the set Ramjahn went to pieces entirely to concede match at 6-4, 6-1.

The minor upset came in the Men's Senior Doubles with the Recreio pair, M. A. Oliveira and J. J. Remedios, con- sidered slightly better on paper, going down to the com- bination of W. F. Foo (Sing Tao) and T. S. Young (Chinese YMCA)..

The match went into a gruelling three games, a five up being called in both the first and second games. Both pairs put on an eye-catching and drop exhibition of smashes

The first game saw Foo and Young surge into an 8-4 lead. de Recrelo pair tought every point and caught up at 13-all when the Chinese called for a five up. They had to fight hard for the aces but only conceded

The

Chinese combination was erratic at the commencement of the second game and let Remedios and Ollveira jump them to an 11-2 lead. They fought back grimly from that point and another five up was called at 13-all. The Recreio players in-

The hearty hand-clapping heard overy few minutes from the stands followed some spectacular piece of work by Tsul rather than Ip. How- GOLF ever, the reigning Colony Champion proved to everyone's satisfaction that 1. was no fluke that had won him the title for the first time last year.

There are players on local courts who can show better stroke play than Ip, there are a handful of them who can be as steady. There seems to be no one who can match him at both these points.
