ROFILE of 1947: It was the sun that made

the year.

1947 began with tempests and blizzards and the still shroud of snow. For four months the sky did not clear once. And the people, unpre- pared, resentful of this burden of the elements, grew sour and sullen and listless. It was lucky indeed they found a clatterbox like Shinweil on whom to fasten their hate, or there might have been some real trouble.

Into this atmosphere of pinched and petty gloom there arrived an American reporter, Mr Nat Finney, of the munguzine Look.
