THE most striking feature of the Catholic Church is that it is catholic.

This may sound rather obvious thing to say, but a mo- ment's reflection shows that it is a fact more often than not overlooked by casual observers. The word catholic means, of course, world-wide or universal. It means, and this is much more it is non- to the point, that national.
