Investigation Into Background Of

Parliament Members

What sort of a background have Britain's Members of Parliament? What was the average age at which they left school? How did those who left school complete their education in later years?

Some of the answers to these questions have been gathered by a team of investigators working for the Paychological Department of Manchester University under the direction of Professor T. II. Pear, and their survey of the present House of Commons has been published in the Journal of Psychology.

Answers were received to 67 percent of the 040 question- naires sent out to M.Ps. of all Parties, and many of them not only answered questions, but valuable and gave additional unsolicited information,

The questions dealt mainly with the Members' education and career. Fifty-six percent of the over 300 to be Labour M.Ps. were found children of skilled manual workers and 10 percent of unskilled workers, which means that 66 percent of the Labour Members come from working class hoines,
