Hadj Wants
Algerian Autonomy
By ALDERT BREUGNOT
(United Press Staff Correspondent)
Algiers, May 18.
"One hundred and sixteen years ago the French took our land from us by bloodshed. We have to shed more blood to take it back." Such are the words of a tall, bearded Mohammedan, Messali Hadj. fiery leader of the Algerian independence move- inent.

With the French ter- ritories overseas, from Hanoi to Algiers, aflame with the desire for independence, the French Government can ill afford at this crucial time to let the conflagration spread to the nearest and perhaps most valuable oversens possession, North Africa.
