AGAINST
INFLUENZA
Washington, Dec. 15. The United States Govern- ment is ready to wage all-out war on influenza thle winter.
The chief weapon in the, at-
tack is a new vaccine developed by army doctors during the war, which is expected to help great ly to alleviate the scourge.
The US Public Health Service has started a powerful puiflicity cam- paign to encourage the use of vaca cine among civilions. State and municipal authorities are being sup- piled with large quantities, and some Industrial organisations are offering to inoculate all their employees free of charge.
Experience with the vaccine has so far been encouraging. A single in- jection has been found to give rim- plete immunity from influenza for a period of two months or more in about 76 per cent of the cases where it was used. In some cases the im- munity lasted for a year. !
The vaccine is produced by intra- ducing influenza Virus Into egg em- bryos and then treating the virus with a formaldehyde to kill it. The
resulting product, when used to ino-
culate human beings, stimulates the production of antibodies that lend to ward off influenza. Most people feel no harmful effect from the Ino- culation, though about ten per cent are made unconfortable for a day or two.
Because of the egg base of the vaccine, however, persons allergie to eggs are warned against it.
The US Government's interest in defeating the results of a possible epidemic is made obvious by the foll the disease has previously talien here. Over the last ten years, the annual number of persons absent from work for more than a week due to influenza hrs averaged more than 10 per 1,000 among men and nearly 30 per 1,000 among women. Deaths from the disenso during the last ten years ranged from eight per 100,000 in 1933 to 30.4 per 100,000 n 1937.-Reuter.
