LEWIS, IN A 37-MINUTE COURT HEARING TO-DAY, DEFIED THE GOVERN- MENT'S ATTEMPTS TO PUNISH HIM FOR THE NATIONAL SOFT COAL STRIKE AND THE FEDERAL JUDGE, ALAN GOLDS- BOROUGH, ORDERED HIM TO TRIAL ON WEDNESDAY ON A CONTEMPT CHARGE. Lewis' defiance was voiced through his lawyer in the preliminary skirmish of the Government's campaign to break the walk-out of 400,000 miners that started on Thursday.
