HONGKONG TELEGRAPH

Lattimore and Endorsement Chang Hsueh-liang

Some weeks ago a news agency report from Washington' stated that official circles there were greatly perturbed over the quarrel between the Chinese Communists and the Central Government, and that Mr Owen Lattimore, who was being sent to Chungking as the President's personal representative, would take up the matter with Gen. Chiang Kai-shek. Some time! later, it was reported that Mr Lattimore would also intervene on behalf of Gen. Chang Ilsuch-liang and try and obtain his re- Tease.

One would have imagined that in these grim times the State Department would have something more to worry about than the quarrels of the Communist party with the Chinese government, and that Mr Lattimore would have something else to do in Chungking than bother, the already overburdened Gen- cralissimo about the fate of Gen. Chung Hauch-lang, writes a correspondent of the "North China Daily News" in Pelping.
