The inconsistency of West's play against mere game contracts, and was in the fact that quite obviously, there is no excuse for such a play he changed his mind in midstream. as West made in the following desi: Even though he had first round trump control he properly refused to open his singleton club, being afraid (as he explained later) the
that such a lead would give declarer a free finesse if East held a minor honor in the suit. But,
If the singleton club would have been a bad opening lead, what words enn be found for the mame lead after the dummy appeared? By that time West could see that declurer's open- ing heart bid and later slam bid had been based on the A-d of spades, the Q-J-10 of hearts, and possibly the queen of diamonds. Surely, It was inconceivable that he could lock the club king.

As may be observed, South was anything but timid in his bidding. Having opened with a minimum heart bid, he later blithely necepted his pariner's slam Invitation.
West, after considerable thought, decided to open a low spade. Dum my ducked and East's queen lost to the ace. Declarer Jed a low heart to the king. WEEKS the house wan a silent as the grave. Philip stayed in his room and ate his meals ns if he were a man in solitary con- finement. And until the late hours of the morning, he would write in his, diary, his pen flying, his lips twisted into a peculiar smile.
One night Stella could bear no longer. She knocked on his door and when she stepped in, Philip was sitting before the fire- place scanning come letters,

She drew in her breath sharply. He had taken them from the post before they were sent. "You— you opened them?"
"Of course. All. And never one word of complaint. Nobody can suy you're not a loyal wife."
All at once, he rose and came toward her. "We're so unhappy. aren't we, darling?" he asked gent- ly. "All three of us. You, be- cause you love Ward and have to stay with me. Ward, because he loves you and can't have you. And I, because nobody loves me.”
Now his voice softened even more; "We must put an end to it, Stella. We two together." His eyes were glittering madly. "Then I'll have you all to myself at last." Slowly, his hands went toward her throat. "Don't be frightened dar- ling. It's so easy and you know I wouldn't hurt you—”
Her terrified scream cut through his words. "No! No! Don't!"
Sobbing hysterically, she ran from the room.
THAT NIGHT,
when the was high, Philip moon watched her as she crept out of the house, wearing a coat and carry- ing a suitcase. So she was gone. He felt all twisted inside. She was running to Ward. What he had always feared, had happened.
The next day he telephoned Ward in London and, just as he had expected, Stella
was there
with him. No, Ward informed him, she was not returning. She had suffered too much. She was going to try to make something else of her life.

you about that as soon as possible, No. Please, not in London. I'd be too near Stelln. You know how I feel."
And to it was arranged-against Stella's better judgment. Ward was to come out to Chassingford late the next day.

The Story So Far:
Seemingly normal, intelligent and attractive Philip Monrell has married Stella Bergen, a beautiful refugee who has been a companion to his mother. They are happy but the erratic, morbid side of Philip's nature develops more and more. He secretly kills Stella's pet kitten because his friend, Ward Andrews, has given it to her. He becomes obsessed by the notion that she and Ward are in love. As head of a steel works he antagonizes the men and almost causes a riot. Then, one day, nearly crazed, he tries to push Ward into a steel furnace. That night, Ward confronts him with it. They quarrel and Ward leaves to go to London. Philip has won but at the same time, he feels that he has really lost Stella.'"

Then he replaced it in the door crack and tied it to the bell rope in such a way that it seemed as if the knife handle were the bell handle.

Ward obliged but suddenly Philip Iaughed, "How stupid of me. There's no one at home. I sent Clark Into Chassingford. Never mind. I suppose we can do with- out it."
Now Philip began to talk gally, feverishly, about everything under the sun. His eye was on the clock However.
But finally Ward, cut in brusque- ly. "I haven't much time, Philip, Hadn't wo better get down to busi ness? You said that you'd like to talk over arrangements for tho divorce

Ward-please don't think badly of me. Whatever I've done, whatever I may do, you and Stella are the two people I've loved most in the world."
Deeply moved, Ward gripped his hand. Then he turned and left.
THAT NIGHT a high wind
wae-blowing-when-Clark- walked into the library. The French windows were
open. A dim light was burning. Then sud- denly the old man uttered a cry and started back in horror.
Philip Monrell was lying on the floor dead, a hunting knife bedded in his heart!
The arrest and trial of Philip Monrell's suspected murderer was swift and dramatic. There seemed to be no question of It. Ward Andrews had killed his best friend.

Stella watched Ward, erect pale in the prisoner's dock, listen- ing to the evidence against him. His foolprints had been found in the garden. His fingerprints were on the knife. Clark, the butler, had heard his master voice his fear against "enemies." And later, there had been the violent quarrel between the two men.
The Solicitor General faced the Jury. "Gentlemen, you have only to ask yourselves опе question. Did Ward Andrews kl Philip Monrell? It the answer to
