OFFERS TOWNS
U.S.
FOR
THE BOMBED
War-time towns for blitzed populations may be built in Britain with the help of United States money. One scheme already afoot is to "adopt” one of East Lon- don's worst bombed areas and construct a township, with emergency buildings hous- ing 8,000 people.
Eminent Americans say there would be no difficulty in raising the £750,000 involved. But man-power and materials may present difficulties. The new town would be moved out to a safe area. The people would take their old community spirit and associations with them. They would be together instead of dispersed throughout reception areas.
Essential workers of the avacuated districis would be ac- commodated in such houses as remain. Hostels might be con- trived, and they would spend their "leave" with their families at the new township.
One proposal to expedite the plan is that bricks and materials, Includ- ing doors, window frames, and sani- tory equipment salvaged from the blitzed district should be used to build the new homes.

Hutments For Homeless Most important of all arguments for some such schone is thint there will have to be a widespread exten- sion of hutments for bombed-out workers.
Belfast has already taken steps. It is seeking to
