NEW NAZI THRUSTS AT LENINGRAD, NIKOLAYEV
& ODESSA IN PROGRESS
SPECIAL TO THE “TELEGRAPH”
LONDON, AUG. 11 (UP)-THE RUSSO-GERMAN WAR ENTERS THE EIGHTH WEEK WITH TWO NEW THRUSTS AT SOLSTI AND UMAN-ESTABLISHING NEW MENACES TO LENINGRAD, ODESSA, THE IMPORTANT BLACK SEA GRAIN PORT, AND THE NAVAL BASE AT NIKÓLAYEV.
GENERAL BUDENNY IS FACING A CRITICAL PHASE OF THE BATTLE FOR THE VITAL PORTS.
British military experts fear that an advance in the Uman area if extended successfully to the southeast may compel General Budenny to yield all along the Dniester line and possibly abandon both Odessa and Nikolayev. It is pointed out that the Germans must contend with a great number of deep rivers in this sector which will be difficult to bridge.
GERMAN DESIGNS ON CRIMEA
ANKARA, Aug. 11 (UP),~Best informed military circles believe that from 250 to 300 German barges euch capable of carrying about 400 men, as well as a dozen U-boats which for several months have been lying at Constanza will soon be in action if the German troops who have penetrated southwest of Klev enn drive southwards to the Black Sea and occupy Odessa,
Nikolaiy and Kherson.

The battle at Solsti in the Leningrad-Vitebsk railway, 65 miles northeast of Pskov and due west of Lake Selmin represents à substantial drive on Leningrad and it is believed that it may be connected with the battle in the Kholm area. However, it is pointed out that the Germans are still 120 miles from Leningrad and about 900 miles from the oil fields in the Caucasus.

Military commentators are of the opinion that:Hitler is apply- ing full pressure to the drive to the Black Sea in search of quick payment "for indisputable losses" after his failure to achieve the quick conquest of the Ukraine and Caucasus.
