TYPHOON BECOMING INTENSE: It's a Way They Have

WIND VELOCITY OF 98 M.P.H.

Gallant Harbour Rescue By Police Launch

:

ONE OF THE MOST CONTRARY AND UNUSUAL TYPHOONS IN THE HISTORY OF THE SOUTH CHINA COAST CONTINUES TO THREATEN HONGKONG FROM A DISTANCE OF ABOUT 40 MILES SOUTH OF THE COLONY, BUT ITS MOVEMENT IS SO SLIGHT, THAT THE ROYAL OBSERVATORY AT 1.45 P.M. TO-DAY WAS UNABLE TO SAY WHETHER OR NOT HONGKONG WOULD RECEIVE THE FULL FORCE OF THE DISTURBANCE.

IT WAS REVEALED, HOWEVER, THAT THE TYPHOON IS GROWING IN INTENSITY, THAT THE BARO- METER HAS FALLEN CONSISTENTLY THROUGHOUT THE MORNING AND THAT WIND VELOCITY IS INCREAS- ING. HOWEVER, THE WIND CONTINUES IN THE SAME DIRECTION, NAMELY NORTHEAST BY EAST, WHICH NORMALLY INDICATES THAT THE TYPHOON IS MOVING SOUTHWARDS. INDICATIONS FROM GAP ROCK ARE THAT THE DISTURBANCE REMAINS PRACTICALLY STATIONARY, AND THAT UNTIL A CHANGE OF WIND DIRECTION IS NOTED, IT CANNOT BE SAID WHETHER OR NOT THE TYPHOON WILL DIRECTLY STRIKE THE

COLONY.
