April 18 marked the 110th anniversary of the establish- ment of the Sydney "Morning Air
Herald", the oldest of all exist- ing newspapers in Australia.
This newspaper first made its appearance on April 18, 1831, as the "Sydney Herald," a publica- tion of four pages, issued once a week, with a circulation that rould be numbered in hundreds. Seven years later it became a tri-weekly, and on October 1, 1840, a daily.
-The-Fairfax- proprietorship-of-the- "Herald" has extended over 100 years, for it was on February 6, 1841, that John Fairfax, with Charles Kemp да his partner, purchased the "Herald" from Frederick Michael Stockes, then sole owner of the paper
and one of its founders.
