STOCKHOLM, June 18 (Reuter). -German reaction to the closing of the German Consulates In the United States is. described Ra "dismal silence" by the Berlin cor- respondent of the Stockholm Tid- ningen, who says that there is the Impression that Germany přefers to be surer of her position before nnswering.

The situation borders on rupture, though open conflict is not Imminent since the nerves of both parties are good, and it is hardly likely that either will precipitate events,

Germany, adds the correspondent, desires to delay the break as long us possible. Her chief desire is to: avold

Roo- facilitating President sevelt's "wor policy."

The principle of "not to allow our- selves to be provoked" hitherto fol. lowed is no longer applicable to Germany, but it is desired to main- tain world uncertainty.

HE WENT INSIDE

A WHALE

A scientist came up with an affirmative answer in Philadel- phia recently to the question of whether the whale could have swallowed Jonah.

Just to make certain, Dr Eugene Maxmilian Karl Gelling, Professor of Pharmacology at the University of Chicago, said ho crawled through the gullet of one of the big creatures.

This whole, of course, was dend. "It was a pretty slimy trip," Dr Gelling remarked, "but there was plenty of room.

"And n ́number of the whalers up along the west coast of Cariado, whose families have been whaling for generations back, any their fathers told them of unquestioned cases in which men overboard were swallowed.

Never Seen Again "They were bever seen again, though,

Dr Gelling took up the study of whales years ago, as à sideline to his interest in the pituitary gland and because these glands. In the whole are of such large size.

Since then, as scientific super cargo on many whaling ships, he has | assembled these whale facta:

The Sperm whale is the only and enough to haya swallowed The largest animit now on the earth, some Sperms reach, a length of 85 feet.

A whale baby comes from an egg. no larger than tha human ovum, búť it is 20 feet long and weighs two tons when it is born.
