Anti-Sport War at Home

TWO WEEKS AGO the "Telegraph" reprinted an articlo by Bon Robertson, "P.M." correspondent in London on the anti-racing (grey- hounds and horses) agitation that had found its way to the Press. Below aro the articles in the “Daily Express" that gave rise to. Robertson's.com- monts:

BACKYARD POULTRY and plg keepers may get more food for their hens and pigs. Owners of race. horses and greyhounds may get less,

The Minister of Agriculture, the authority primarily concerned with Anding food for ali animals, has set its experts to work, They have to decide whether it is better to encourage an increased production of bacon or provide for a continuation of horse and greyhounil racing.

Indications are that bacon will win.

There are nearly twice as many Tarchorses in training now as in the last war. And while never more than fifty greyhounds run at a track meeting, dogs in training average 100 66, for each track.

1 hortes and greyhounds were eut by 50 per cent, there would be 10,- 000,000 more eggn and about 1,000,- 000 lbs. more bacon available for our national food supply.

SAID

Official Statement

NAID an official of the Ministry ofį

Agriculture

"If the Cabinet says racing must continue it is nur job to provide food for the hurses in training. And, of course, greyhounds must be fed, too. "We are faced with this edict, sup- ported by leaders of the workers:

Unless you provide some sporting recreation for the men in war indus- tries at least one day a week you will not get the wheels of your munt- tion factories turning smoothly,"

In This Corner........ The Champion

Paul Holt

WHO does this fellow Kenneth Pipe think he is? And where does he want to lead his falihful readers?· It says that horse-racing is sinful in wartime. Thirty-two horses going to the tapes at Lincoln on Wednesday could, if they weren't racing, lay 268,800 eges. He reckons that fantastic sum by the amount of oats homes eat that might be eaten by hens.

He reckons, 100, that six greyhounds racing together for 45 seconds mean the loss of two pigs to the nation's larder.
