MISS JEAN
MACKIE DECORATED
IT is learned that a former Hongkong girl has been de- corated by His Majesty the King for courage and example in a bombing raid "somewhere in Britain." She is Miss Jean Mackie, daughter of Mr G. Gor- don Mackie, late of Messrs Gibb Livingston & Co. Ltd, and former Legislative Council member.
At the time of the raid Miss Mackie was the officer-in-charge of a "Wren" hostel which suffered a direct hit, killing ten girls.
Miss
Mackie, who Was very popular in Hongkong, was one of the Colony's keenest women fliers, and obtained her "A" certificate here in June, 1934. She was the first woman in the Colony to receive this certificate, and was also the first member of the Hongkong Flying Club (of which she was Secretary) to gain this distinction,

centre of the vessel is the kitchen on one side, and a chart room on the olher, with quarters for the first mate and other senior members of the crew.
The bowsprit is adorned with a small teak-wood Sgure of Our Lady of Peace, painted in gold, and on the transom of the is the Coat of Arms of the of Manila. She was originally bullt in an ad- joining shipyard, but was transferred to the present yard a few months ago for adjustment and completion. A radio compass and wireless tele- phony set will be installed on. the vessel in Manila.
pine Army Reserve,
Colonel Calvo, who is in the Philip- and Colonel Arnaiz, a reserve officer in the Air Force in the Philippines, were the two intrepid alrmen who flew a small planc from Manila to Madrid vin Hongkong just before the start of the Spanish civil wor. The two men have been companions on many other adventurous jaunts, but this is their most ambitious undertaking in n sca-going vessel,
Merely for. Adventure
Colonel Calvo said that the pur- pose of the trip was merely one of ndventure, but they would try to re- cover some of their expenses by selling photographs of their journey to various magazines, and he would probably write a book about the trip, which is expected to last about two years, and also to write something about his flight to Spain. He recall- ed that the cost of the flight to Spain was over 20,000 pesos. The plane, valued at 18,000 pesos, was lost in Spain, and petrol amounted to about 3,000 pesos.
The adventurers on the trip wili include Mr Rafael d'Almeida, Mr Adolf Fernandez, a newsreel photo- grapher, and n crew of two Chinese and two Filipinos.
Among those present of the launch- ing were Mr and Mrs L. R. Ildefonso, You will laugh with Chaplin when Mrs 5. Derg, Mrs J. L. d'Almelda, Mr and Mrs Z. Soldinski, Mr and

All the above are incorporated In "The Great Dictator", which is now showing at the Oriental Thentre, at popular prices. There is a great de- mand for seals at all performances and indications are that the picture will have a record run at this popu Iar theatre.
