South Shansi Hostilities Claim Heavy Casualties

PEIPING, May 18 (Reuter)—Ten days of heavy fighting” in South Shansi have resulted in Japanese forces surrounding the Chinese on the north bank of the Yellow River in a wide semi-circle with a 50-mile arc along the river, the ferries of which are occupied by the Japanese,

In view of the vast extent of the area involved, It is unlikely that the Japanese can make the whole Chinese forces prisoner.

Well-informed sources, report that numerous Japanese hospital trains are passing to the north dully via the Kinhan Railway, carrying also hundreds of boxes, which usually contain the cremated ashes of the dend.

The Japanese officially admit using "considerable forces", which are re- [liably estimated at about 12,000.

The Chinese forces total 180,000.
