Studebaker Secures Defence Contracts
Mr Dewey W. Smith, Vice Presi- dent of The Studebaker Corpora-. tion, at present in Hongkong, has- just received advice from his head office in South Bend, Indiana, "that Studebaker has just been awarded one of the largest defence contracts to be let to any one firm. The total amount involved is US$180,000,000.
this amount
approximately US$40,000,000 is for new plants
while the balance calls for plane mo- tors of the aircooled type.
Contracts for the new plants have been let and the ground for the new buldings is alrendy under way. A of over 20,000 new employees have been added to the Studebaker payrolls.
The Arst motors are due to start. of
the assembly lines in January 1042 and within, thirty days after production starts motors will be com ing off the assembly line at the rate of several hundred per day, If necessary three shifts will be maini tained, eac
each shift to be of eight hours duration.
In accepting this huge undertaking It was the destro of Studebaker to
from the work without fater- with regular car and truck production; however if this becomes impossible then, defence work will, be given preference. It is interest- Ing to note that during the Great War Studebaker was the first plant In America to offor their entire facili- tles to the Allied cause.
