SITWELLS GIVEN LIBEL DAMAGES

Miss Edith Sitwell, authoress, and her brothers, Osbert and Sacheverell, have each been awarded £350 damages in the libel action they brought in the King's Bench Division against the Co- operative Press Ltd, printers and publishers, and Mr Sydney R. Elliott, editor, of "Reynolds News."

They complained that a review of "Edith Sitwell's Antho- logy" in "Reynolds News" imputed that they had no literary ability and that their arrogance and conceit constituted their sole claim to prominence.

Mr Justice Cassels Bald that during 30 years more thar 00 volumes had come from the pens of the Sitwells. Of Mr Hamilton Fyfe, who, it was stated, wrote the article complained of, the judge said:

"It was stated in a letter that he had 50 years' experience. He will not be able to add to that any recol- lection of going into the witness-box in this action, because the defendants designedly kept him out."

Prolific In Their Work

The evidence showed, his lordship continued, that the Sitwells had been almost prolific in their literary efforts up to and including 1940. The words complained of were defamatory of all three plaintiffs.

TEC defendants invited their readers to believe that the realm of eblivion had thrown open her doors and dragged all three plaintiffs in; that death in the world of letters had overtaken them and that they would be remembered with no ordinary smile.

Miss Sitwell was called a snob; her poems were ridiculed and criticized as rubbish, and. the defendants aald that the action was a waste of time In these days.
