SUPER-CLIPPERS BEFORE 1942
SIX TO FLY
Six new Boeing 42-ton super-Clippers, ordered by Pan-American Airways, are being prepared, months ahead of their original schedule, to take their place on the world's airways before the end of this year.
even as
Construction on the Clippers is being accelerated for two good reasons. One is to clear the Boeing plant for production of flying fortresses. Equally Important, wartime measure, is to use these ships to expand trans-Atlantic passenger and mail service.

CONTROL
OF RICE
Government Sets Up Monopoly
The Hongkong Government issued on Saturday an important com munique, announcing a change in the rice control scheme.
The policy hitherto has been to avoid direct Government storage and trading. Instead, dealers have been licensed, with
of the keeping adequate stocks as an essential con- dition of licence. Import has been facilitated and export has been per- mities. Prices have been axed.
Thus Government has tried (1) to ensure against shortage, (2) to keep prices down, (3) to avoid destroy- ing private enterprise, (4) to avoid departmental complications and loss to the taxpayer, (5) to keep stock moving and so avold deterioration.
The plan, however, is not consider- ed to have worked satisfactorily, and the necessity for close co-operation with the Shanghai authorities appears urlsen. Government has to have therefore decided to take full control of the wholesale rice trade, which means a Government monopoly of import and export.
It is also stated that, because of the shortage of Thailand rice, the community will have learn to like the softer, more glutinous Burma rice,
