de...The
American Poet Gibes Hitler
Americans, who are at peace with Germany, place no restric- tion on names which can be pub- licly applied to Hitler, but Britons do, though they are the Nazi leader's foes.
They invited Maxwell Ander- son, the American poet and play- wright, to write a poem for the programme of a war relief show which they organised in New York. The number Mr Ander- son produced began with this
verse:
In the Third Reich, look where
you wili,
You arc one vulpine physiog; These are dog days in Germany And Fuehrer litler 15 the
dog. This was the last verse:
toiling after,
and woinen Watch the Fuchrer's dream take
And
A
shape, dream that []
him
- men
who followi
Shall be more like him and
the ape.
The poem was not on the pro- gramme.
British officials said that though they personally consider dog and upe conservative terms for describing Hitler, they think publication of them "might be construed as giving _the_event_the_appearance_of_anti-
German propaganda,"
