Strikes Illegal. Under the Defence Hegulations, H. E. the Governor hos mude an order termed the Conditions of Employment und

Arbitration

Order, whereby new powers aro aa- sumed by Government to prevent work being interrupted by trade dis- putes.

Alter defining the terms strike, lock-out, workman, etc., the now Regulation states that If a strike is antlelpated a report may be made to the Labour Ofleer. This officer, Mr B. C. K. Hawkins, may leave the set- tlement of the dispute to the employer and the employers if suitable ma- chinery for negotiaton exists.

If no settlement can be reached, or, is unduly delayed, the dispute may be referred to the Employment Arbi- iration Tribunal. Any agreement reached in negotiations described above will be binding until varied by subsequent negotiations.

The Labour Ofcer may refer to the Employment Arbitration Tribunal for advice on any labour matters.

Part II of the Regulation states that an employer shall not declare or take part in a lock-out, and a worker shall not take part in a strike, in concection with any trade dispute, unless the dispute has been reported to Labour Officer, and twenty-one days have elapsed since the date of the ru port and the dispute has not during that time beer referred by Labour Officer for settlement.

Despite the cold wind, a fairly large crowd assembled and was rewarded by an exhibition of sparking tennis,

The holders took the first set with out much opposition and it was thought they would walk away with the match, but in the second set Remedios and Choa improved considerably and by brilliant volleying jumped into n 4-1 lead.

Through steady play by H. D. the Runjalus gradually crept up to 4-all, and tool the lead in the ninth game but Remedios and Chou put on pressure. and the second set was won by Chou's marvellous volleying which beat the Rumjahna completely.

Chou, who was on the forehand court, fought many duels with Sirdar and in- variably scored over the champion.
