GAP Vichy's Secret Barter Treaty
LONDON, Apr. 1 (Reuter).-- Very revealing figures regarding Axis acquisitions of importa into unoccupied France wore quoted by Mr. Hugh Dalton, Minister for Economie Warfare, in roply- ing to a series of questions in the House of Commons to-day.
Mr. Dalton declared that figures purporting to be amelal showed that
taking the two months, of December and January together, about 1450 vessels with cargoes of half a million ed-Marseilles and tons had entered --
about 400 salys with curgoes of 136,- 000 tons had left Marseilles, Mr Dalton continued "a
large num
ber of reports from various sources Jeave no doubt that the Germans take their pick of all the incoming cargoen, while, the Italians are permitted a smaller choice. Nearly all these re- ports indicate that more than half such imports are taken by the Axis.
Commodities Imported "Many reports give the proportion as high an 80 per cent."
Principut commodities imported, continued Mr Dalton, were ground- nuts, genin, fruit, vegetables, fish, cuta, skins, sugar, coffee, cocon, wool,

To suggestion that it was time that the practice of allowing French ships from the French Empire over- sens to pass unmolested through the Straits of Gibraltar should cease, Mr Dalton said that a number of intercep- tlong
had in fact taken place. Referring to the recent incident, Mr Dalton declared that it was not a case that ships were allowed to pass freely through the Streits at all time. Some exceptions had been 'made in recent months.
Reconsider Permission
Later, Mr. Dalton was walked if he would reconsider the decision to allow two foodships to pass unmolested to unoccupied France now that it had
been disclosed that the e-alleged ・gift of wheat by Germany to only part of a barter
