The Dutch East Indies has lately come very much before the public eye. Although the islands

have become modern in many re- spects, certain native customs still hold sway.

Balinese Idea Of A

Heaven

Toothless

If you dislike the dentist's drill, imagine the sensation of hav- ing your teeth filed half down to the. gums!

The ordeal is one that is faced several times during the life of a Balinese. The people of Bali em- brace the Hindu reli- gion, and believe that filing away half their teeth enables them to become highly accept- able when entering heaven,

The rites are also undergone in the be- lief that levelled teeth, though partially de- stroyed, will equip a pious Hindu to eat the soft foods of Paradise.

Because their bicus- pids are no longer un- even when they die, the only foods that will be served to them upstairs will be prac- tically mush which, to the Balinese mind, means the pap of cele- stial luxury.

who goes from village to village, saws mer- rily away.

The girl relations cf a local rajah went under the file calmly at a big filing cere- mony recently near Denpasar. Their for- titude was remarkable through the opera- tions, though no pain- killing drug was ad- ministered before, or during, the filing.

Preceded by the in- cantations of a high priest, the girls laid down on their backs and "took it" without a whimper.

In this article, John Raleigh, who is on a visit to the Indies as representative for United Press, describes a strange and little- known Balinese ritual.

The only signs that they felt pain were muscle twitches and a swelling of the neck.

Though they clasped their hands in front of them no white knuckles showed, nor were finger nails dug into their palms. They were dressed in head-dresses of gold leaves

and robes covered with sparkling gems.

The girls ages ranged from twelve to fifteen. They seemed as elated when the filing was finish- ed as any of us stepping from the dentist's chair with the welcome phrase of "that's all for a year or so" ringing happily in our

cars.

Several times, while the filing went on, an old woman, the girls' nurse, who had no teeth at all, would examine the job and shake her head. Back went the little princesses, and more filing followed until the old woman was satisfied.

These of the same caste as the rajah's relations sat and watched cheerfully, talking and laughing as the file's rasp sounded throughout the pavilion prepared for the occa- sion.

After a few years-the nerveless teeth drop out, but heaven's door is all the more accessible for that. And toothless jaws do not bother a Baliness.

lives. Apparently they do not feel pain as we do, or are far less sensitive. They take it and like it.

Besides, the occasion calls for feasting and drinking on a big scale.

High caste natives have their teeth filed four or five times during their

The setting of the royal filing would have pleased the critical eye of a Ziegfeld for colour and oriental grandeur.

The realism of a Belasco production was present as well.

The girls were borne to the pavilion on chairs carried by gally-caprisoned young men and boys. The bearers. costumes were fancifully sewn with gold from the waist the down. Upwards from midriff, plain brown skin was colour- topped by bright splashed turbans. Spearmen went before the procession, while a native orchestra rat- tled, boomed, and chimed on its primitive instruments.

were old men and women who spat crimson betel nut juice regularly. Pigs, village mon- grels and chickens intermin- gled under the feet of the marchers. Smells varied from incense to refuse..

the The priest waited in pavilion. He had gold orna- ments interwoven with flower buds in his hair, and WAS draped in a white sarong.

His chanting was strangely familiar. In loud tones and long drawn out Ilindu pro- verbs, he imitated a Grand Central train announcer to perfection.

Then he stopped nside, and beckoned to the filer, who thrust pieces of bamboo be tween molars, and went to work. The onlookers chat- tered while the file sung ita angry refrain.

When the girls had lost half thelr front teeth, dentine, nerve and all, the feasting began. Native whiskey was served to the priests and a visiting rajah, who wore his best bib and tucker-n dirty. white shirt, bilious green necktie, sarong and sandals.

The orchestra redoubled its efforts and dances followed. Belel nut juice stained the dirt everywhere, and a bang- up celebration concluded the show.

The girls expressed their gratitude to one and all that heaven was a step nearer.
