Once more the long- suffering Balkan peoples see foreign invaders tramping
over lands endowed so rich- ly by Nature that they could be a paradise on earth-if only they could be left in peace for even one century.
What are "the Balkans”? Most of my fellow-countrymen, with their inimitable gift for misunderstanding foreign coun- tries, think 'vaguely of "the Bal- kans" as a remote region some where in the South of Europe inhabited by incorrigibly war- like peoples.
This is the reputation a tragic and lovely part of Europe has gained from being the place periodically chosen by Great Powers for a battleground.
