BY CLAUD NORTH CHRISMÄN;, M.D. EARLY CARE OF BRONCHITIS WARDS OFF CHRONIC STAGE BRONCHITIS, which is an inflammation of the inner lining of the bronchial tubes, is one of the most common and distressing diseases of the respiratory tract. We have acute and chronic bronchitis.

The acute condition accompanies Almost all of the common colds, The victim feels the distress of the com- mon cold followed by tickling in the throat and lightness under the breast bone. There may be more or

·less fever and general malaise, followed by n dry cough. Soun the mucus liquefies and expectoration becomes protuse and the patient gets

belter.

But, if the resistance is low and the inflammation severe, the cough and lightness persist and the discase becomes chronle. Then we have condition that may lead to nny- thing. Almost all cases of bronchial asthing can trace their beginnings to an acute bronchitis which becomes is followed by the de- chronic and velopment of symptons of asthma.

The inflamed bronchial tubes re- duce

resistance of tissues to the other disense, germs and provide an excellent hotbed for the develop ment of more serious conditions such

pneumonia as tuberculosis,,

and other lung conditions. Any cough which persists for several weeks after a cold should be examined by a physician to forestall the develop ment of such complications.

Persists Throughout Life

To Us

A chronle, bronchitis once estab- lished is likely to persist through- out life and the cough of old folks is the result, with all its annoyance and disabilly gradually increasing. The patient never is able to get enough air to supply oxygen to the tissues, and he is always tired and locks energy enough to carry on an active

life.

Bronchills is a danger- especially as n

a result of coms Thus it behooves us to prevent its pro

progress, Prevention of the common cald and care

of the acute discase are imperative. Active treatment in the beginning will generally prevent bronchitis from becoming chronic. Complete rest in bed, good food, and avoidance of exhaustion

and *x- pomire cold and wet usually re- suli in cure. We are all too prone to neglect its

its care. We say, "Oh, It's only a cold!" and continue our usual work until it grows severe and infection becomes deeply seated

of us possess enough resis nce to overcome the acute trouble we give nature a chance. Many

of us are prone to prescribe an inl- #inl laxative, especially Some doctors say this is not neces- sary. They are often right, but since many patients are habitumily constipated with much toxic material locked up in the intestinal canal. and since an acute cold reduces the

such treatment. Saling are not advisable; they act quickly but retard the action of other drugs for some hours. Evacuation fellowed by a hot water bottle or a mustard plaster to the chest will rellove the congestio

Sometimes remedies to cause a mild perspiration are niso helpful for this condition. Rest in bed fill the acute symptoms have passed along with good food and plenty of fresh air, usually will result in recovery, Cough mixtures do no good in the early stages. Later such remedies are prescribed as the Jodides or am- monlum chloride which, Uquefy the mucous secretions, afford much re- lief.

These continued efforts to avold a recurrence of the neute attacks will provent the condition from becom- ing chronic. It the condition per- sists, careful examination is needed to ward

off tuberculosis. Care of the general health, avoidance of ex- posure to cold and wet and seeking of a warm climate in winter will keep the condition within reasonable bounds.
