London, Dec. 19. Mr Winston Churchill, speaking to-day said BriTM the Commons tish forces in North Africa were now attocking the fort and town of Bardla with strong and Increasing forces and he had every reason to believe that fighting was developing favourably. ife stated that Italian prisoners were in excess of 30,000 and this in all probability was now an understate ment.

Our losses for the Arst week up to Monday were 72 killed and 730 wounded. We also took 100 service- able guns, 60 tanks and large quan- titles of war materials.

An

Of Govt Accounts

Criticisms concerning the accounts kept by certain Gövern- ment departments are contained in the annual report of Mr A. Pollard, the Director of Colonial Audit, which was tabled before the Legislative Counell yesterday.

Coples of the Report have been forwarded to the Secretary.. of State for the Colonies, and in an accompanying letter His Excellency the Acting Governor, Lleut-General E. F. Norton, states that the Report appeared to disclose, as In the past, à generally satisfactory state of affairs, and expressed appreciation at the considerable amount of time the Audit officers had devoted to Instructing and advising officers of other departments on accounting and storehouse-keeplog matters. Such work, he said, should properly be part of the duties of a Treasury Inspector, and provision for such a post was being made in the draft estimates for 1941-1942.

His Excellency also pointed out that the dispute over the sum of

$80.103.60 claimed by Government as CHRISTMAS

additional royalty due by the Hong-1 kong and Yaumatis Ferry Co., Ltd, had been settled on the latter mak Ing a donation at $29,000 to the S. C. M. Post War Fund.
