GREEK STRATEGY IN THE ALBANIAN CAMPAIGN

(“Reuters” Military Commentator),

LONDON, Dec. 5.--The Greek campaign has already given a very hard blow

to the Axis and to Mussolini in particular.

The full results, however, are not yet decided; these results may be infinitely far-reaching, and decisive results can only be attained if the campaign is carried on with the utmost vigour.

Everything depends on that word vigour-that is to say, the strategy of the campaign must largely

the be decided by character of the Commander-in- Chief.

him The main decision before seems to be whether or not to pursue a cautious policy of not peasing for- ward to the sea and of giving up the idea of destroying the Italian army in Albania. The object of such a polley would be to establish a good line of communication behind him and to avoid counter attack from the Italians. Such a policy may be theoretically safer than a dashing advance, but is it in practice?

The Itullons would be given time to recover and would have time to bring fresh reinforcements from Italy. Would the position of tho Greek army then be so safe?.

Hitler Could Act

In addition to the recovered morale of the Italians, time would have been given for Hitler to act and to bring overwhelming numbers against it.

Blockade As Blind To

Run Japanese Bus Co.

SHANGHAI, Dec. 6 (Router).-A new and important angle to the Japanese blockade of the western autaide roads area has appeared with the operation of Japanese-owned buses along cer- tain streets of the zone in place of vehicles of the British-owned China General Omnibus Company which has not been permitted in the area since the blockade was initiated.

Greeks. But a successful. war is not made by

copying campaigns without]

following rules and

regard to divergent circumstances,

Many factors in the present situa- tion in Albania would urge a vigorous pursuit. Though the lines of cum- munication are difficult and railways are conspicuous only by their ab- sence, a rush to decisive points should not put an undue strain on transport,

Navies Could Help

Ships of the Greek and British navies should be able to give most effective assistance to an attack on Valona and Durazzo as soon as the: Greek land forces are within striking distance. If the Greek commend can capture these ports, the results will be almost decisive as far as the wor in Albania is concerned. A great portion of the Italian army would be destroyed, being forced to surrender or die. Few could escape to the

north.

Despite Mussolini's boasts it should be practically impossible for him to 'send into Albania fresh forces to readjust the balance in his favour

for his only port would be Santa

Giovannil de Mediel in the northern corner of Albanin. Then, with fairly short front resting on Lake Ochrid in the east and on the sen in the west, the Greeks would be in a much better position to meet, any eventualitles which might arise.

CHUNGKING, Dec. 5 (Router),— China will be practically self-suffici- ent in steel by the end of the next “year, and will be able to cover most of her military and industrial needs. This announcement was made to- day by an official of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, after a conference with 30 Chinese iron and steel ex- perts.

This year, metal production has been 30 per cent above last year. Within the next six months, it is elnimed that four-Bfths of the new furnaces will be at work, reaching a maximum output of the end of 1041.
