CRICKET TAKES ITS PLACE Encouraging Enthusiasm Shown By Games Clubs: Pleasant Week-end

BY NOW the cricket season has been going on for a month and it is pleasant to find that there is so much of it. Teams of course are bound to vary as various members are away training or in Camp. But as long as one remembers that it does not matter who wins, all is and will be well.

At the moment there do not seem to be many new arrivals, though most of the old hands seem to be going Lawn Bowls pretty strong. What has struck me particularly is the

lack of bowling. I know of course that there have been Players

several "sensational performances," but usually, I believe, against weak batting. At the moment I can think of no bowler in the same class as A. R. Minu.

The lack of bowling was very well shown in the match between the H.K.C.C. and the Civil Ser- vice. The Club had out'a pretty good batting side-T. G. C. Knight who comes from Shang- hai is a useful acquisition-but only five of them had a knock, and yet the Civil Service have useful bowlers-or bowlers who have been useful-in Baker, now able to play for them after a Benson's absence, Perry, Mc- Lellan and Whitley while a new and young recruit N. L. Smith (No no relation) is shaping quite fairly.

But somehow there is just nome- thing lacking final bit of devil perhaps which makes them far less successful than you would expect them be if you watched them bowling for a bit. They do most things but get wickets.

On Saturday, after Parsons went early, Knight (51) and Owen Hughes (71 not out) took ten with the bowl-
