Fatigue is now regarded as definite complaint. Its symptoms and effects are be- wildering in their variety. I may reveal itself as an ob- stinate skin disorder which refuses to respond to ordinary treatment; it may even result in deterioration of the moral judgment.

Chronic fatigue intoxication to give the complaint its full name-is rather common. It is insidious in its attack, gripping the victim in gradual and subtle fashion, tightening its hold until at last he is forced to recognise that there is something seriously wrong. The symptoms are not always, and not even frequently, nervous In type. Chronic fatigue intoxica- tion is a disease entity with a list of possible symptoms for exceed- ing In exto

extent and variety those of any other complaint.

Fatigue is u

Normally, however, the remote control comes into operation first. Experiments have proved that after the mind has dictated a cessation of muscular work on the ground of fatigue, an electrical impulse will cause the red muscle to work with quite as much energy ng be- forc.

When danger to life is threaten- ed, the remote control is not put inte operation and the mind per mits the muscles to go on working until the local chemical control stops them. This explains the ex- traordinary feats of endurance of the body is capable in which moments of great danger.

materials, but this is neither felt nor suspected by the individual.

Fatigue is influenced by factors other than work. Certain diseases produce chemical substances in the blood which increase fatigue or make it appear earlier. Diabetes is a typical exam- ple. This complaint pro- duces an acid in the blood, which, in sufficient quantity, will produce all the symp toms of fatigue without any work, having been done.

Chronic fatigue intoxication is the result of the gradual accumula- of excessive tion in the tissues amounts of fatigue material. This causes a deviation from normal of the every function in practically body. Affected people find it very difficult to secure either physicni relaxation or mental repose and this is the beginning of a vicious circle commonly found in many forms of ill-health.

Sleep is a vital factor in the prevention and cure of chronic fatigue intoxication. There are certain chemical processes that take place during sleep, and they will not take place under other conditions. During mental and bodily activity calcium and potassium are trans- ferred from the nerve and

Nowadays, chronic fatigue into- xication is a red light, in the dis- Lance for nearly everybody, be- cause nearly everybody is working at high-pressure and under sleep conditions that vary between poor and bad.

It is up to everybody, therefore, to take steps to secure the maximum value possible from their sleep period.

More stories of British serenity under fire emerged from recent air raids on the country. German propagandista cry havoc, the "ajry devil" hovers in the sky-and Britain pro- ceeds unruffled. The Home Guard who, so to speak, arrested a German airman in his stride is magnificently typical."
