THE trend of the war has emphasised the significance of India's position in the Im- perial chain which links the British Common- wealth together. The intervention of Italy, by widening the orbit of hostilities, has brought "the chemy nearer to the outer bastions of In- dian defence stretching from Malta to Aden, and the implications of this extended front have given now importance to strategical posi- tions in the Middle East and Malaya.

The protection of India ¿from external, aggression is primarily but indirectly secured by British and Indian forces occupying key poal- tions in, Egypt, Aden, and Singapore.

Those forces hold all the 'main bulwarks 'in a strategic circle which the vigilance of the Royal Navy keeps intact.

The unexpected course of the War" in earlier stages did not, Justify the creation of a large In- zan Army similar to that which was, raised in the last War; but the spread of hostilities to the Mediterranean has resulted in the Introduction of an

expansion scheme aiming at the immediate formation of a new and formidablo force.

This measure supplernente. the. already extensive arrangements made for the internal defence of the country, and is linked with the maintenance of the expeditionary forces, which have reinforced gar- risons abroad.

Army expansion in India is Jargely governed by the country's capacity to arm and equip the re- crulted, men in a manner that will at them for modern mechanised warfare;

Indians have quickly adapted themselves to modern war weapons and machines, and there Care indications, that if the need arises the country will be able to raise, equip and maintain forces as large and as competent as those (raised in the last War, when more than 1,000,000 men were in the field in various 'theatres."
