Flying Boat Gets Two Italian Subs.

Pilot Decorated LONDON, Oct. 7 (Reuler)-The award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Acting Flight-Lleutenent William Campbell, pilot of a dying boat of the Middle East Command, is for the destruction of two Italian submarines with bombs and attacks on another with machine-gun fire from the flying-boat, of which Fit Lieut. Campbell was in charge, says An Air Ministry bulletin.

ол

The attacks took place on two suc“ cessive days. The first submarine was destroyed by a dive-bombing alm tock, after which debris and all rose i to the surface of the water.

Second Victim

The next day the same flying 'bout sighted an Italian submarine on the surface and again Campbell dived to the attack, scoring direct hits beside the conning lower.

Although in the open sea and de- spite an approaching storm, Camp- bell alighted and taxled the flying

boat among the wreckage and saved four of the submarine crew. Owing to the state of the sea the rescue de-. manded

and

On the return journey to the base, Campbell sighted yet another sub- marino on the surface, which he machine-gunned. After ย 'second attack, the submarine crash-dived.

Campbell's special aptitude for dealing with; submarines has earned for him the sobriquet of "Dead-Eye" Dick" among his fellow pilots.
