Hitler's Other Weapon

In his broadcast to the nation and to the Empire oversens re- cently Mr. C. R. Attlee uttered

timely warning which our people must heed in these critical days. He said:

"We have recently witnessed the overthrow of a great nation -France. This was not brought about only by the force of arms. It was caused very largely by the use of Hitler's other weapon, the destruction of the unity, con- fidence, and morale of the people, resulting in the paralysis of its will power at the critical time."

Mr. Attlee went on to point out how this weapon is used to stimulate sectional interests as well as national differences in order to destroy the power of resistance. We have seen the method operated successfully in the countries which have be-: come the prey of the Nazis. It must not be allowed to operate; in Britain.

Will Hitler atize Spain before he at- The answer is: He has already done so.

It is four years to-day since the Axis dictators, using Franco as their pawn, em- barked on the conquest of the Peninsula. With the fall of Madrid in March last year the conquest was achieved,

Of the real nature of the struggle in Spain warnings we had in plenty. The flies of the News Chronicle, from August, 1936 onwards are full of them. Again and again, to the na- tions at Geneva, Alvarez del Vayo showed the writing on the wall. And, broadcasting on the first anniversary of the war, Indalecio Prieto, Spanish Defence Minister, said:

"The rebel operations are directed by German and Italian general staffs. Only with our triumph can we ex- pel the Germans and Italians from our soil. If we should be defeated Spain would be- come an Italo-German colony." It was all in vain. None ao deaf as those who will not hear. In Britain the Cham- berlain Government persisted in the melancholy farce of so- called Non-Intervention.

We shall, almost inevitably, see another Peninsular War before Europe's new Napoleon meets his Waterloo. Let us add the restoration of the de- mocratic Spanish Republic to

our war aims, and the people of Spain will rally in their millions to the standard of our new Wellington.

After all, that would be a logical step. For the democra- tic Spanish Republle was kill- ed by Hitler. It was, in fact, his very first foreign victim.

Out of the obscure distance of Eu- rope a voice had been rising and falling like sound buried in the deepest galleries of a mine. But whose voice could it be? Not Dr. Goebbels' or any of his tame hyenas, for it was talking sanity, und talking it in the steady, em- phatic rhythms of revolution. Not an English broadcast in German, for it seemed to be talking to England. Not, sure- ly, the German Freedom sta- tion?

The Freedom station, which hid in the garrets of frontier towns and moved like a hunt- ed animal from forest to forest inside Germany, was supposed to have been caught, When it was heard again sceptics said it was in France. Now France is conquered, but still these German voices spread out over Hitler's Eu- rope.

It spoke for only about 20 minutes before it broke off and started abruptly repeat- ing itself. It did this several
