CHUNG SING PROTEST Judges' Award In Fifty Yards Race Disputed: Error Of
Hand Timing
(By "Ripple")
MAIN TOPIC of conversation among swim- mors over the week-end, apparently, has been the action of the Chung Sing Swimming Club in walk- ing out of the quadrangular gala at the European Y.M.C.A. on Saturday night. They had a grouse -strong and legitimate—there is little question of that, but what has come in for strong criticism was their method of expressing their dissatisfac- tion.
If there should be anyone yet unaware of the reason for the incident, I would recount that in the 50 yards free-style D. H. Taylor (V.R.C.) and Ng Tun-man (Chung Sing) were adjudged to have dead-heated in 25 seconds flat. Chung Sing disputed the decision, but un- der the methods used to obtain the result there was no likelihood of the judges changing their opinions, and Chung Sing were, perforce, without satisfaction.
It was anticipated that the|
finish would be very close, and Home Cricket the YMCA, had considered the difficulties there were in the
way of judging the finish with!

and a tree-style swimmer like D. H. Taylor the record was broken.
Incidentally, in the 100 yards breast-stroke, where the "butterfly" was also allowed. LM. Remedios (V.R.C.) used the modern stroke against Fong Chong-yue, and though Remedios gained almost hal a length's lead over the Arst three lengths, the stroke took so much out of him that he lost that lead over the last length and only managed to win just over touch-not 1% seconds as announced.
WITH the withdrawal of Ng
Nin (Chung Sing) from the gala, Chan Chun-nam was un- opposed for the 220 and 400 free-style events.
His style continues to cause amazement fle pulls himself through the water solely by the strength of his arms-his little side Isick when he rolls on to his left side is negligible and employing the same un action he performed as- tonishingly well in the 200 yards free-style relay. He swam second against L. M. Remedios, and though it was dimeult to judge whether he lost any distance for Remedios had a lead from Hutchinson, he held his pince very well.
Saturday proved that there was nothing In the reports of an im- proved kick. To improve on a kick one must first have a kick, and I don't know whether one could call Chan's leg action a “kick". How- ever, judging by what he can do with bis arms alone, someone did express wonderment of what he could do with a leg action as well.
But I have read of these swim- mers before. There is one, in Amerlen, I believe, who cannot do much without his legs. being tied Orsti
