Startling Gorman Air Losses

LONDON, Aug. 14 (Reuter).. A more complete check-up shows that on Tuesday the Nazis lost 78 planes for certain. We lost 13 planes, but ten pilots are safe. Saved of them were not even injured.

Some of the 500 Gorman planca ware used in waves against Southampton and the Kentish coast. Some got through and dropped bombs on Southampton, but they paid dearly, 22 being destroyed, of which nine wore. Junkers dive bombers.

The Germans, it is believed, are prepared to lose large numbers of planes in order to keep the Spitares and Hurricanes busy while the bombers work more or less un- molesied. If this is so the plan is

these figures: not working well chow.

Toll-Tale Figures

On Sunday the Germans lost 22 bombers and fighter-bombers and 44 fighters. On Monday they lost 30 bombers and fighter-bombers and 82 fighters. On Tuesday they lost 04 bombers and fighter-bombers and 14 fighters.

In other words the RAF, are get.... ting the bombers.

It is stated officially in London that the number of German planes probably destroyed or badly damaged In the past two weeks are even greater than the 140 claimed as

1 definitely brought down

The official claims are

are conserva». tive although in the present type of fighting it 13 impossible to stick to the old rule of not claiming a victory unless it is seen by two pilots. It is a

a point of honour with each R.A.F. pilot not to claim a German plane unless he has seen it break up pr crash.

As a result of this the 'offelul Agures are often less than half those unlikely to return home.

4% To 1 Ratio

In the past eight weeks the ratio of German and English losses has been 4% to 1. From June 13 to Tuesday last 50 days the RAF, and A.A. batteries shot down 527 enemy planes while the Royal Navy brought down another 16 in British waters around const, making a total of 543 planes, or 9% per day.

the

During the same period and in the sanie area the RAF. lost 120 planes or roughly two a' day. In addition 31 R.AF, pilots of this number are safe, The Germans have lost over 500 men kliled or captured as against our OD,

Clear-Cut Victory LONDON, Aug. 14 (Reuter)ÀN American correspondent who watched the Nazi raids on a south const town yesterday says that the British fighters definitely drove off the Ger- man

planes, which he estimated to be about 150.

The sky was filled with whirling planes which looked like files.

While the fighting was going on bombs sent into the water splashed. high from the sen as the Nazis jelti- - soned-their--1oads.

Other German planes destroyed some barrage balloons,

.

Commenting on the fight as a whole the American commentator said that there were no questions about it that the attack was defeated,

Gocbbol's Fancy Figures

SPECIAL TO THE "TELEGRAPH” BERLIN, Aug. 14 (Domel) —The record number of times Germany claimed to have destroyed the British Navy in the early days of the war appear likely to be exceeded in magnitude by their claims respecting the R.A.F.

No less than 132 British machines. were shot down on Tuesday, if Goebbels is to be believed.
