LITTLE CAESAR is back in-
THE chain gang clanks its ugly way on to the screen again in Blackmail. This is as boisterous a piece of melodrama Hollywood has put to- gether for a while.
as
It has Edward G. Robinson as a man earning a hazardous but respectable livelihood put- ting out fires at oil wella.. Into his life creeps a black- mailer who had known him years before, when he had escaped from a chain gang after a false conviction.
The blackmailer squeezes a for- iune out of his old nequaintance and then cynically sends him back to the chain gang. It does not end that perhaps there, of cource, but is enough to be going on with.
All this is rich material for the ot Mr. superabundant energy Robinson, and he tears through it with great gusto.

"Blackmail," however, is not just an exciting mixture of great fires, breath- and screaming taking escapes,

Birds have a fascination for both the young juniors as well as the older juniors, and with the com- ing of spring the birds return to us bringing thoughts of flowers and but soft summer days. If we glance through our stamp album we and many beautiful birds chat- ting to us from all parts of the world,
shall never forget the coming of the Kookaburra bird one day in a packet of stamps. The bird appears on the stamps of Aus tealia, and the merry twinkle in his eye makes you want to join him in one of his catchy laughs. The Australians call him the Bushman's or Settler's Clock because his foud, raucous volée rings out at certain hours during the day near the Bushman's hut. Here is a book which in the peaceful stillness of its atmo- sphere may well bring re freshment to many in these harassed days. For its peace Is the peace of accepted tragedy, the peace of resigna- tion.
Its author, 11 Chincse whose family records go back to before the Christian era, has been an exile In England now for several years, and has already given us in other volumes his quaint, yet penetrat- Ing, reflections en English life in pence and war.

Naturally a group so large could not maintain harmony, unless each member knew his place; and in
fulfilment fact the accurate
by of the rites of his subordination made the whole of their common religion. Over the life Into
door of entrance the key-- word "happiness" was inscribed, and all would have endorsed the motto which the author's artist father gave his son-"Rushing Is fruitless."
Indeed, to an English reader, 1 cannot but appear that the motives of the life, the activities, the plea aures, the maxime and the re- sponses to them, were all so low in tone that their effectiveness and the joy felt in them may scem mysterious.

So it must be remembered that the foundation of that Jay was never individual, but lay in the prevailing religious unity,
Thus one of Grandmother's deepest satisfactions was to direct, year by year, the polishing and Jacquering of the priceless Tzu Tung coffins, six in number, which had been provided by the fore thought and devotion of her sons. The fact that she was likely jo-be herself the first to need one only naded to the relish to her care.
The same considerations hold all through. The charm of the life is the exquisite organization of its details; the happiness of the mem bers is to play their parts, to enter Into the tradition and taste all its aroma as they do so.
What an English child feels occa sionally and intensely at Christ- mas, for example, a Chinese fell with every kind of modulation and qualification every day of the year. He lived hemused in mazes of age- old ceremony.
