Discrimination Denied

LONDON, July 23 (Reuter).A question on the overseas evacuation of children was raised in the House of Lords to-day by Lord Marley, replying to whom Lord Snell said that there was no discrimination in Government's scheme such as children of well-to-do parents getting to the Dominions and the United States while the children of poorer parents had no such

advantages.

Some children had been sent away by parents at their own risk before the Government scheme foot. Government

Situation Altored

Governmet could not foresee that when the scheme was launched that I would appeal to so large a pro- portion of parents. The situation hud been altered by an unexpected number of applicants. So far there Ind been applications in respect of 175,000 children in state-aided schools and 10,500 children outside thuse schools.

These figures proved how little substance there was in the suggestion that there won some kind of social distinction in Government's scheme: The postponement of the scheme was a matter of deepest disappoint- ment. The Government could spare naval vessels and were deter- mined not to risk sending children without convoys. The situation might change and every opportunity was being watched.
