SOLUTION
North must win the first trick with the king of hearts and must immedi ately play clubs, the ree followed by queen being the best method of sult. East wins the club trick and returns the queen of diamonds, which South covers with the king and-West wins with aces West leads spade (trump) four, and North wins with queen and the ace follows with diamond eight which West wins with nine. North- South can now win tricks with two trumps and the seven of diamonds.

Candy had $250 which the ranch had been compelled to pay him for the loss of his hand four years ago, and another $10 he would receive at the end of the month. He begged to be allowed to put in all this in return for a part- nership in their place; just for the right to live there, and hoe in the garden, and wash the dishes.

George decided to mice the deal. He and Lennie would receive $100 between them at the end of their month. This with Candy's fortune, would give them $400 enough cash to secure the place they had in mind, for which the needy old couple who twned it were asking only $600. Candy and Lennie could go and get the place started, and George would continue working on the ranch until he had earned the balance.
For the first time their dream seemed close to reality. Candy hap
pily handed over his $300, and George
was slowing it away when the ranch hands, returned from the- barn. Among them were Slim and Curley, still arguing. At least, Slim' was ar guing while Curley was apologizing for having asked Siim once too often about Mae's whereabouts. NAT.

"Don't tell, nobody," Lennie was numbing under his breath. "Gonna live on the fat o' the landi"
George motioned the mountainous youth over to his bunk. But as Lennle arose and turned his back, Curley grasped his arm, whirled him around, and lashed at his face with both Asia. Lennie cried out in terror. "George! Make Im let me alone, George!"
George, seeing that which he had dreaded most happening, was for once at n loss. Curley wept raining blows mercilessly on Lennie's face. Tower- Ing nearly a full twelve inches above his assailant, Lennie made no effort even to defend himself, as the fists. smashed into his face and the blood welled from his nose and trickled: from the corners of his mouth.
Then George found his decisión, "Get 'im, Lennie," he yelled through his cupped hands. "Don't let him do it! Go get 'im!"
But Lennie still too confused to Sght back, only covered his face with his hands, while Curler viciously rained blows into his abdomen,

Beside himself with pain and terror, he gripped the hand in his viselike clutch, gripped it harder and harder, deaf lo George's frantic com- mands to let go. At last Curley, his face chalk white, went limp, and Lennie opened his hand, Curley fell to the floor in a dead faint, every bone in his hand broken...
When they had revived him, Slim spoke to Curley sharply and quickly.

"Listen. I think you got your hand 'caught in a machine. If you don't tell nobody, what happened, we won't. But you jest tell and try to get this guy canned and we'll tell everybody. An' then will you get the laugh!"
Curley agreed, and was rushed off to town to a doctor,
