FORGED ORIENTALE

LETTER

Nino Months' Hard

Labour For Man

Found guilty on two counts of attempting to obtain money. by means of a forged letter, Mak Chi, a youth, was sentenced to nine months' hard labour by the Chief Justice, Sir. Atholl Mac- Gregor, at the Criminal Sessions this morning.

The following comprised the Jury: Messrs. G. Anderson (Foreman); Chan Chl-gong, Cheung Bong-lat, Cheng Chung-choy, C. I. Barr, · C. Carr and D. C. S. Alves,

Prosceuting, Mr. Reynolds, Crown Counsel, said 'complainant was Sheng Sul-pun, who lived at 3 Lion Rock Road, Sheng corresponded regularly with his father in Shanghai, and on June 21 he received a letter purporting to be from his parent. The letter asked him to hand $15 to one Li Kwan-tak, who would call on him in the near future,

Suspicions Correct

Sheng noticed that whilst the Address on the envelope was in the handwriting of his father, the letter Itself was written by a different hand. He also found that a piece of paper had been pasted over a portion of the envelope.

n

Suspecting that the letter was forgery, Sheng waited for Li to call, on June 23, Mak turned up, ared saying he was surnamed L, at the same time asking that the money be handed over. lle also produced a letter purporting to be from Sheng's father, telling him to give $15 to the bearer.

Mak nnintained that one Li Tak arked him to deliver the letter.

LATE NEWS

5-POWER

TALKS?

LONDON, July 18 (Reuter). The possibility of a five-Power conference on the Far East Is suggested by Mr. Vernon Bartlett In the "News Chronicle."

He says that Mr. Cordell Hull's de- claration might show the way to a more courageous and inore dignified treatment of the problem. Mr. Hull is in a position to know how difficult I would be for Britain to defend the Burma Road by force and without alth.

A diplomatic possibility is that à conference will be called between the Interested Powers-Britain, the United States and Russia-ind the two belligerents.
