In 11 Colonies

LONDON, June 19 (Reuter)-Replying to a question in the House of Commons to-day, Mr. G. H. Hall, Under-Secretary of State for the Colonics, said that legislation pro- viding for compulsory military service exists in the British Solomon Is lands, Ceylon, Falkland Isles, Fiji, Gilbert and Ellis Islands, Honghong, Kenya, Uganda, Malaya, Northern Rhodesia, etc. Proposals are now under consideration for a similar legislation in four West African colonics.

It had not so far been found necessary to intro- duce a legislation of this kind in other portions of the Colonial Empire.

Dr. L. Haden Guest (Labour) asked whether this applies to protec- torates. He mentioned that part of Nigeria was a protectorate.

In replying, Mr. Hall said that he would fook into that matter.

NEW HAVEN, Connecticut, June 19 (Reuter)-"We are grateful to you for the help you have sent us for arms, nero- planes and machines. We want everything you can send us quickly as you can send it," de- clared Lord Lothian, the British Ambassador, to-day.

"The issue will probably be decid- ed this year in six months, and not next year or in two years or three years.

"The outcome of the struggle will | affect you almost as much as it will Jaffect us. For if Hitler gets qur feet or destroys it, the whole founda- tion upon which the security of both our countries has rested for 120 years will have disappeared."

Lord Lothian pointed out that us long as the British Flect was able to *** i guard the British Channel, the Straits of Gibraltar, etc., America had no serious problem of Atlantic de- fence, but "the security of the Ameriena would be entirely different If these exits and bases were held by a great imperialist_power unfriendly to democracy or to the Monroe system.
