AIR ACTION
A TWENTY-YEAR-OLD aircraftman who was a haulage hand until he joined the R.A.F. last year has won the Distinguished Flying Medal in his first action.
Aircraftman 2nd Class John Richard Mayor, of Warrington, was air-gunner in one of three planes at- tacked by Messerschmitt fighters recently.
The battle lasted 35 minutes, and the official announcement: says that with his accurate fire Mayor disabled one of the engines! of an enemy lighter and-"undoubtedly saved his aircraft from being shot down."
His plane was hit many times, but even when his turret was put out of action he got in a last burst of fre
at the Germans.
